Percentage change in value of wine exported from Italy to extra-EU countries in 2020

The coronavirus pandemic had a huge impact on wine exports from Italy to extra-EU countries. In April 2020, the value of wine exported to China shrank by almost 52 percent, while Australia followed with a decrease of nearly 30 percent. The crisis did not change the ranking of extra-EU importers of Italian wine over the considered month, as the United States remained the leading destination market, with an import value of 136 million euros.

Leading wine importers

In 2019, the worldwide ranking of Italian wine importers saw the U.S. at the top with 736,5 million euros, followed by Germany at 514.3 million euros. The UK ranked third outdoing Switzerland and Canada. China was out of the top three, also due to a lower growth rate compared to other countries. In 2019, Italian wine exports to China grew by less than five percent.

The Italian wine export big picture

The diversification of Italian wine export looks challenging. Latest macro-region data showed that Asia is the third export region for Italian wine, with 421 million euros as of 2018. Its import value was dwarfed by Western Europe and NAFTA countries, with 3.3 and 1.8 billion euros, respectively.
